There is a rare condition known as heteropaternal superfecundation in medical terms which may sound impossible but can occur. Where twins born from different fathers occur when a mother releases two eggs that become fertilized by two sperm cells from different men during the fertile period of a woman which must occur within a day.
A woman needs to have sexual intercourse with two different men within a day before or after ovulation for both eggs to become fertilized and adhere to the uterus. This condition is rare in humans but does occur. It is a condition more common with other species, including dogs and cats. In species where females have multiple partners, males develop strategies to ensure their sperm reaches the egg to fertilize it. In humans, some women have multiple partners and this condition may affect 300 twin births in the US, where the babies come from two different men from the same pregnancy.
In the case of the Brazilian woman, DNA results proved that the babies had two different fathers. The woman had sexual relations with two men on the same day without using any contraceptive methods. Both men managed to fertilize one egg in each of the two eggs she released, giving her twins.
Both babies had genetic material from the mother and each one from a different father. Both babies develop together in pregnancy but each one has a different placenta to develop independently within the womb. This condition differs from identical twins where the egg is fertilized by one father and then divided into two.
